Abstract:
Imagine you are given two sticks of different lengths and have to find out the ratio of their lengths very accurately. You can only use a sharp pencil - you have no ruler. What would you do? This talk will be a very gently introduction explaining why this problem is related to the group of 2x2 matrices with determinant one.
