Success of Mathematics students at the conference DWUMiAN
We are pleased to announce that the 3rd year students of Mathematics - Dawid Ptach and Magdalena Wodniczak were successful at the Students' Conference on Applied Mathematics of DwuMian. The DwuMian conference organized by the Faculty of Mathematics and Information Sciences of the Warsaw University of Technology and the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Mechanics of the University of Warsaw was held remotely on March 26-27, 2022. The competition for the best paper was conducted in two categories: Statistics and Data Engineering and Technical Sciences and nature. Students of our Faculty gave a paper "Modeling tumor growth, or differential equations in action" and won the third place in the category of papers on the application of mathematics in technical and natural sciences.
Abstract of the paper: At the turn of the last 20 years, an increase in cancer incidence has been observed. They are certainly one of the greatest challenges facing modern medicine. A chance to better predict the development of a neoplastic tumor is to combine the knowledge and experience of oncologists with mathematical modeling. By using the tools mathematically, we can estimate how the tumor will grow. In our paper, we will present step by step how to model tumor development using differential equations by adding further assumptions to the model. We will simulate the obtained systems and show the biological interpretation of the obtained results.
Scientific supervisor: Dr. Agnieszka Bartłomiejczyk, prof. of GUT.
