Almost 455 thousand PLN granted for research on Morse theory
The award-winning project “Morse Theory in Analysis, Dynamical Systems and Geometry” will be carried out at Gdansk University of Technology under the direction of Maciej Starostka, PhD, and the foreign partner will be a team of mathematicians under the direction of Prof. Luca Asselle from Ruhr-Universität in Bochum.
The project was evaluated by the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft – DFG) as the leading organization in the Weave-UNISONO competition. NCN accepted the evaluation results and awarded funding to the Gdańsk Tech team.
Morse theory is a mathematical theory that describes the decomposition of differential manifolds into simpler pieces. Its methods are used in the study of differential equations allowing a variational formulation. Gdańsk Tech researchers will develop the Morse homology theory for an abstract class of functionals on Banach manifolds, as well as for specific classes of functionals. This is a continuation of research already started in the project "Morse Theory in Hamiltonian Systems" funded by NCN in the BEETHOVEN competition.
About the program
The Weave-UNISONO competition is the result of a collaboration between research funding organizations gathered in the Science Europe association. It was designed to simplify the procedures for submitting and selecting research projects in all scientific disciplines involving researchers from two or three European countries. Winners are selected through the Lead Agency Procedure (LAP), which means that only one of the partner institutions is responsible for the complete evaluation of the proposal. Under Weave-UNISONO, researchers can apply to collaborate with partners from Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovenia, Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium-Flanders.
